Inadequate dietary habits can contribute to or cause stress.
The consumption of certain foods can add to the stress of
everyday life either by stimulating the sympathetic stress
response directly or by contributing to its stimulation by
creating a state of fatigue and increased nervous irritability. Sympathomimetic agents
Sympathomimetic agents are chemical substances which
trigger the stress reaction and in this way mimic the
sympathetic stress response.
The most common of these sympathomimetic stressors is
caffeine contained in coffee, tea, cola beverages,
chocolated and cocoa. Hypoglycemia
Symptoms of hypoglycemia (anxiety, headache, dizziness,
trembling and increased cardiac activity) may cause normal
stimuli to become acute stressors and lower our tolerance to stress. Reactive hypoglycemiacaused by high intake of sugars
within a limited time, or functional hypoglycemia
which occurs when meals are missed, both are inducive to stress. Salt
The sodium ion of salt causes a retention of water within the body.
Excessive fluid retention has the effect of increasing
nervous tension through edema. Overeating and undereating
High intake of food results in obesity which in turn can lead
to ill health and a variety of diseases.
Likewise, taking in too few calories or eating an unbalanced dietlowers our resistance to stress.
It is not only important to take care about what we eat,
how much we eat but also how we eat!
The stress reaction increases the metabolism leading to weight loss.
However, many stressed individuals not only overeat but
also eat an unbalanced diet.
In many cases, inadequate and/or excessive nutrition is
coupled to lack of physical exercise leading to obesity,
one of the major health problems of our society.
Obesity as a risk factor in causing disease is well known.
It can lead to heart disease and arterial disorders,
including hypertension.
It is linked with higher than average rates of chest
disorders, liver dysfunction, gallstones,diabetes, varicose
veins and certain forms of cancer. In the category of
mechanical disorders such as arthritis, although being
overweight does not actually cause the condition, it will
make it harder to treat.
Obesity is not only a symptom of stress but also a source
of stress.
Obese people often lose self-esteem and have a low level
of self-perception which by itself makes one more vnlnerable
to stress.
Faced with stress-related conditions, a disturbing number of
people turn to drug therapy which unfortunately corrects only
the symptoms and does not identify or relieve the underlying
cause of the disorder.
Treatment
Physical activity burns the by-products of the stress response that might
otherwise be harmful.
Unused products such as sugars and fats contribute to degenerative processes
such as cardiovascular disease or ulcers.
Physical exercise as a prophylactic measure against stress requires a regular
pattern of exercise.
As little as thirty minutes, three times per week has shown significant
beneficial effects.
